Save a Life

This September is the 2nd Save A Life month organised by St John Ambulance. Many of you may have seen their controversal advertisement running at the moment to highlight the need to know some basic life support skills.
If not you can take a look here

I am sure it is no surprise to learn that as a practice we practise first aid and life support skills on a regular basis. We had our training this week and it always amazes me how much you can forget in 12 months or how advice is changed.

Having passed our training, our new defibrillator will arrive any day. With this very high tech piece of equipment the chances of survival from a heart attack leap to 80%. A priceless investment but one we hope never to use .

Even a little knowledge can make a difference  so why not make Septemeber your Save a Life month and look at the St John ambulance website or sign up for one of their courses.

How to make a difference for someone who is choking

COUGH IT OUT

  • Encourage them to cough. If this doesn’t clear the obstruction, support their upper body with one hand and help them lean forward

SLAP IT OUT

  • Give up to five sharp back blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand

SQUEEZE IT OUT

  • If the obstruction has not cleared, stand behind them and put both arms around the upper part of the abdomen

  • Clench your fist and place it between the navel and the bottom of their breastbone
  • Grasp your fist firmly with your other hand
  • Pull sharply inwards and upwards up to five times
  • If this doesn’t clear the obstruction repeat backslaps and abdominal thrusts up to three times
  • If it still hasn’t cleared, call 999/112 for emergency help. Continue until help arrives.
